For My Non-EMS Friends

Hello everyone!

I know that you're probably reading my blog and thinking, "Holy hell, this chick hates her job so much. Why would she still be working there?" Just going to tell you straight off, you're wrong.

I absolutely love my job (no, I'm not being sarcastic). If I could work on an ambulance for the rest of my life I would. However, we see some tough stuff. When you do three full arrests in a tour, one of them being a little baby, it gets to you. We're not immune, we're still human. We hurt as much as we do when we can't save an adult as when we can't save a seven month old.

We get frustrated with our patients sometimes. The old lady who is just having an asthma attack who suddenly loses a pulse as we're getting her into our rig. The unemployed person in the projects who calls for a headache. The 43-year-old EDP who calls for an ambulance seventeen times a day. We get it all.

To deal with all of this, we develop a certain sense of humor. Yes, we still care about the people we treat. Yes, we still treat them well. Yes, they are still human beings. But when we get frustrated, we have to take it out somehow, and since we can't do it on our patients, we get sarcastic and snarky. For most it's pretty humorous. For some, it's hard to understand. This is my attempt at explaining.

We're still phenomenal providers, just sarcastic as all hell.

P.S. Never call us ambulance drivers. We are EMTs, we are paramedics, we are highly trained professionals. We do not just drive ambulances. If you don't know what to call someone, ask. We're not all that scary.
